Marian "Sally" Chase

On Tuesday, our Sally went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Marian Jean “Sally” Gates Chase was born in Bellingham, Washington to Roy Gates. Jr. and Doris (Hatton) Gates. Sally and her husband, Jack, were high school sweethearts. Jack was captain of the Mt. Baker High School basketball team and she the editor of the school paper. Sally and Jack met when she interviewed him for an article for the paper. On January 3, 1946, while Jack was home on Army furlough, they were married. They were married for 63 years. While a teenager, Sally was a volunteer observer for the Aircraft Warning Service during WWII. She also was Salutatorian of her class at Mt. Baker High School in Deming, Washington. Upon graduation she was a window dresser for Montgomery Wards in Bellingham, Washington. This experience in fashion and design was evident throughout her life and was expressed in her clothing wardrobe and home decoration. Sally’s husband was disabled due to polio in October 1947. Because he was permanently confined to a wheelchair, Sally took upon all household maintenance and homemaking tasks. She once wrote the Chicago Daily News veterans fund to request a golf cart for her husband to use for transportation to and from university classes. The Dailey News was most impressed with her request and provided the couple with a new car. This car allowed Jack to complete his education at the University of Illinois. After graduation, the couple moved to Las Angels where Jack entered bible school. After completing his Ministerial degree, Jack and Sally began an evangelist ministry which carried them throughout the Mid-West. In 1958 Jack accepted a call to pastor a church in St. Maries, Idaho. Sally often said the five years ministering in Idaho were the most meaningful of her life. Sally took on full responsibilities of church ministry including preaching when Jack was away for an extended period of time. Throughout their ministry, Sally served in many roles including President of the Church Ladies group, Sunday school Teacher and choir member. She was known for her wit, her sharp mind and depth of bible knowledge. Sally always felt her greatest achievement in life was as partner and support to her husband, Jack. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by daughters; Lynette Vail of Corvallis, Oregon. Joni Coutin of Santa Clarita, California, Jacci Nickell (John) of Sioux falls, South Dakota and son, Marc Chase of Corvallis, Oregon. 10 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren, and 1 Great Great Grandchild; sister, Dolores Davis-Bare of Poulsbo, Washington. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 14th at Kings Circle Assembly of God Church in Corvallis. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, May 18th at Greenacres Memorial Park in Ferndale, Washington. Memorial Donations can be made to Benton Hospice Services care of McHenry Funeral Home. To her family and those that knew her well, she was, in the words of King Solomon, “a princess walking as a servant upon the earth.”
