Marcia Sweany-Volpe

Marcia Kay Sweany was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on October 13, 1957, to Robert and Lois Sweany. As the fifth born child, Marcia and her brother, Brian, were fondly known as "The Little Kids." They were adored by their older brother and sisters for their funny antics such as wearing little black derby hats and singing The Little Drummer Boy at Christmas. The family lived in Sioux City, Iowa before moving to Portland, Oregon where Marcia attended elementary school. Detroit, Michigan was home during Marcia's high school years. Encouraged by a neighbor, a humble and hesitant Marcia, agreed to compete in a local pageant. Marcia was eighteen and a senior in high school when she was crowned "Miss Grosse Pointe Woods," which led her to compete in the Miss Michigan Pageant later on. Marcia was a beauty, inside and out. She played guitar and had a lovely voice. Friends and family never ceased to request Rocky Raccoon, the song that Marcia performed in the Miss Michigan pageant. Marcia attended Western Michigan University for two years and moved to Long Beach, California. As members of the family members began to settle in Corvallis, Marcia decided to join them. She took a job at Far West Federal in Albany and then transferred to First Security Bank in Corvallis where her fun-loving, caring qualities made her a favorite among her banking customers. In fact, Larry Volpe met Marcia at the bank, and they were married in 1996. Their son, Micah Liam, whom she adored, was born in 2000. As a lover of animals, Marcia completed the family with a special cat, Gilda and dog, Phineas. Marcia is survived by her husband, Larry and son, Micah, Corvallis; step sons Cliff and Craig Volpe, Eugene; parents, Lois and Bob Sweany, Corvallis; siblings and spouses: Linda and Ken St. Pierre, Corvallis; Barbara and Ray Foshee, Hanford, CA; Bruce Sweany, Eugene; Paul Sweany and Zara Pines, Eugene; five nieces, nephews and their spouses: April and Jeff Merten, Corvallis; Meghan and Levi Doughtery, Claremont, OK; Nick Foshee, Hanford, CA; Callie and Tara Sweany, Atlanta, GA; and seven great nieces and nephews. A memorial service will take place at McHenry Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 12 at 11:00. The family requests memorial donations in Marcia’s name be directed to Heartland Humane Society in care of McHenry Funeral Home 206 NW 5th St., Corvallis, OR 97330.
