Joy B. Bielman

Joy Beverly Anderson was born Nov. 20, 1917, in Seattle, Wash. His parents were Olga Matilda and Joy L. Anderson. Olga and Joy eventually divorced, and in 1922 Olga married Cue John Bielman, who adopted Bev. Cue was the father Bev knew and loved all of his life. Bev also was known as J.B., particularly when he reached adulthood, but family and close friends continued to call him Bev. In 1923, Olga and Cue moved to Bucoda, Wash., where Bev attended elementary school. The family moved to Tenino, Wash., and then to Hermiston, eventually settling in Beaverton, where Bev graduated from high school earning letters in football and basketball. While living in north Lincoln County, he met and subsequently married Alyce Mary Walton in 1937. They had four children but later were divorced. Bev married Edith Hancock in 1966. Logging in Western Oregon was Bev’s lifelong career, which spanned more than 50 years. He loved his work and the exhilaration he felt from the physicality of it. He particularly enjoyed his last 26 work years, when he was employed by Starker Forests. His superior work was acknowledged at his retirement dinner, hosted by the Starker family. Enjoying the outdoors as he did, it was natural that Bev also would enjoy his frequent hunting and fishing trips with family and friends. His greatest passion, though, was his 34-acre farm on Beaver Creek Road, purchased in 1950. He transformed the property that was overgrown with blackberries into a lovely, tranquil site that included two ponds where trout, frogs and beavers were abundant. Nesting wood ducks and mallards were frequent visitors to the ponds, along with other varieties of birds and wildlife. But more than the ponds, Bev was especially proud of a stand of mostly Douglas fir trees that he planted decades ago. Thanks to Bev’s meticulously thinning and trimming them, they have grown into tall, straight trees that are ready for market. He was happy to know that Starker Forests eventually will harvest them; he knew they would take good care of the property to which he often referred as his chapel. Bev’s survivors include his four children, Robert Arlen Bielman of Brush Prairie, Wash., Loretta Ann Shaw of Vancouver, Wash., Mary Arlene Fryer of Corvallis and Ronald Cue Bielman of Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. Also surviving are his brother, Kenneth Dayton Bielman of Corvallis; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Agnes Arlene Barnes; and his two wives. Aug. 17, the day Bev peacefully died, was an important day in the Bielman family. It was the date of Olga and Cue’s marriage; the date of Bev and Alyce’s marriage; and his sister Arlene’s birthday. We believe he timed his departure to add to the importance of that date. A celebration of his life will take place at 1 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Stoneybrook Lodge Clubhouse, 4700 S.W. Hollyhock Circle, Corvallis.
