John Edward Myers

John Edward Myers was born at his parents’ homestead near Fort Rock, Oregon. He grew up in Fort Rock, Bend, and briefly in Fairbanks, AK. His parents were Almond B Myers and Allie Jet Ferrell Myers. His father died when he was 4 years old and his mother married William N Mortimer in 1926. He had 3 siblings: William Myers (deceased), Irene Mortimer (deceased), and James Mortimer of Killeen, TX. He married Doris L Larkin on April 21, 1946 in Corvallis. After a happy marriage of 52 years, she died November 30, 1998. He is survived by two children, Janis M Halsey (Mark) of Ballwin, MO, and Robert J Myers (Patti) of Salem, OR, by six grandchildren, Alice Rhoades (Brad), James Myers (Dena), John Myers, Erika Halsey (Alex Snow), Evan Halsey, Jessica Webster (Jeremiah), by two great grandchildren Madison Webster and Everly Rhoades, and by several nieces and nephews. His son William E Myers (Margee) died in 2012. As a young man he worked for the US Forest Service as a fire look-out at Odell Butte. He graduated from Bend High School in 1937. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1942 and served his country in the Field Artillery in California, Hawaii, and Okinawa. He was discharged as a Technical Sergeant in January 1946. He enrolled in Oregon State College in 1939, and graduated in 1948 following his return from service in WWII. Following his graduation from Oregon State, he worked for Coos County Board of Health in Coos Bay, OR. In 1953 he and his family moved to Corvallis where he began his long career as an investment manager. He retired in 1980. He enjoyed outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and camping. During his youth he and his older brother Bill had wonderful adventures in the outdoors of Central Oregon, creating memories he cherished his entire life. He took great pride in his yard and took meticulous care of it. He was a long-time member of the Corvallis Kiwanis Club, where he served on many committees over the years. He was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Corvallis. He was an Eagle Scout and helped with his sons’ Boy Scout Troop. He also enjoyed OSU sports, followed the Seattle Mariners in his later years, and listened to OSU baseball games. His family wishes to acknowledge his friends and staff at Stoneybrook Lodge, his nurses and caregivers at Timberview Care Center, and the volunteers and staff of Samaritan Evergreen Hospice for their friendship, support and care. The family is also grateful for the devoted friendship of Dick Reynolds. Memorials may be made to the Kiwanis Foundation, Samaritan Evergreen Hospice, or to a charity of one’s choice in care of McHenry Funeral Home, 206 NW 5th St, Corvallis, OR 97330. A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date.
